2019 GICNT Plenary Meeting - Buenos Aires, Argentina

Over 190 participants from 55 partner nations and five official international Observer Organizations of the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (GICNT) gathered in Buenos Aires, Argentina, June 5-7, 2019, for the initiative’s 11th high-level Plenary Meeting.

The GICNT welcomed the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) as an Official Observer organization. Under the GICNT Terms of Reference, partner nations endorsed the Russian Federation and the United States as the Co-Chairs for a new four-year term from 2019-2023. The Kingdom of Morocco was introduced as Implementation and Assessment Group (IAG) Coordinator for the term 2019-2021.

The Plenary provided a valuable forum for dialogue on important policy challenges identified through the successful implementation of GICNT activities since the last Plenary Meeting in 2017 in Tokyo, Japan. Participants recognized the leadership of countries and official observers that hosted and organized these activities. Partner nations agreed to plans for work in 2019-2021 that will address enduring priorities of the GICNT’s Nuclear Detection, Nuclear Forensics, and Response and Mitigation Working Groups.

The Plenary Meeting also provided a forum for partner nations to deliver national statements and provide recommendations that will inform the direction and activities of the Initiative for the next two years leading up to the next Plenary Meeting, which will be hosted by Hungary in 2021.
